This page is here to point out things we see, and wonder why, that may concern our safety, such as:

Why did U.P. cut off the work train that was cleaning up the old ties from the derailment at Cape Horn last summer. Don't these ties pose a hazard, not only for our people walking in the TOW path, but also for our environment? Isn't creosote a hazardous material? Did U.P. remove cleanup from the definition of Maintenance? These ties have been here almost a year and stretch out along the tracks for several miles!! Where is the money going that was once used for cleanup maintenance? Is it possible this money goes into a fund to pay for injury lawsuits? Any money saved, is that considered money earned? U.P.'s answer to the hazard, is to put out a track warrant extending from milepost 106 to milepost 242 telling employees of poor footing. "Wow that's brilliant. Give the guy a bonus. Look how much money he saved us. I've got another idea, since we cannot provide a safe place to walk, let's make them stop movement before getting on or off equipment. This rule will put the liability back onto the employee!!!"
It's obvious the U.P. doesn't care. Money talks.

The Cost of Safety (COS) must be too high to provide a safe work place, as seen here, with rail in the TOW-path that has been there one year, on the Sacramento River bridge at Tehama Ca.
